South Africa is Affordable

South Africa has emerged from years of international isolation to become a premier tourist destination. The country offers a unique combination of the charms, mystery and scenic beauty of Africa on one hand, and excellent hotels, lodges and self-catering ( self contained ) accommodation facilities on the other hand. It is the only country in the world where you can have your word in 11 languages – no wonder Archbishop Desmond Tutu (known as “Arch” among South Africans) calls the citizens of this fascinating country “the rainbow nation”.

Apart from introducing the vuvuzela to the disbelieving ears of the world, the 2010 Soccer World Cup, hosted in South Africa, showcased the First World infrastructure of the country and dispelled many of the myths perpetuated by Fleet Street journalists. Since the peaceful transition to democracy of 1994, South Africa enjoys political stability. There have been no incidents of terrorism or major political demonstrations, as well as no major natural disasters. Contrary to popular belief, there are no lions in our towns and cities. Many international visitors remark on how friendly and helpful South Africans are – we are very serious about our values of “ubuntu” (humaneness) and “gasvryheid” (hospitality)!

As in any country in the world, tourists need take simple precautions to avoid becoming a victim of crime in South Africa. Keep your belongings close to you, don’t walk around exhibiting a million dollar camera, and don’t wander off into areas you would not normally visit in your own country. If you are not sure about whether a place is safe to visit, ask the concierge at your hotel or lodge.

Situated at the southern tip of Africa, South Africa comprises nine provinces, each with its own special flavour and unique scenery, hotels, lodges and other accommodation.

The Eastern Cape offers a variety of breathtakingly beautiful settings: the untamed beauty of the Wild Coast, the secrets of the Tsitsikamma forests, the rough Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area and the majestic plains of the arid Great Karoo. It is also the home of the Xhosa people and where settlers from Britain and Germany landed on the African continent in the 19th century.

The “Golden Country”, as the Free State is also known, offers gold, sunflowers, wheat fields, beautiful farmhouses of sandstone, Sotho villages showing their traditional way of life, as well as the rock formations of the eastern region that glow in the setting sun. Bloemfontein, the capital of the Free State, is also the judiciary capital of South Africa. The Vredefort Dome is the world’s oldest and largest meteorite impact site – the meteorite that landed here is estimated to have been a whopping 10 km in diameter!

Gauteng is the smallest province, but it has the largest population and is the economic hub of South Africa. In Gauteng you can visit the place where mankind originated, where they found the largest rough diamond in history, where the infamous 1976 demonstrations started, as well as the Voortrekker Monument, among other attractions.

KwaZulu-Natal is the traditional area of the Zulu Kingdom, as well as being the home of many of the descendants of the indentured labourers brought from India to work in the sugarcane plantations. The midlands of KwaZulu-Natal is also the site of many a battle: between Boer and Brit, between the Brits and the Zulus and between the Zulus and the Boer.

Limpopo is the northernmost province of South Africa and makes it the ideal place to start if you want to venture into Mozambique, Zimbabwe or Botswana. In this province you’ll find the northern part of the Kruger National Park, giant baobab trees, an African Rain Queen, Mapungubwe (place of an African civilisation between the 11th and 13th centuries and home of the “golden rhino”) – to name but a few.

Mpumalanga (meaning “place where the sun rises”) is a very picturesque province, where you can visit the biggest green canyon in the world, a village straight out of the the gold rush of the 1800s in the old “Eastern Transvaal”, the southern region of the Kruger National Park, spectacular scenery such as rock formations shaped like three giant rondavels and much more.

The Northern Cape is the largest (almost equal in size to Germany), but most sparsely populated province of South Africa. Vast and arid, the Northern Cape offers opportunity for tourists interested in history (the diamond rush and battlefields route) and botany (the flowers in Namaqualand during springtime), science (the SALT-telescope in Sutherland) as well as the adrenaline-junkies looking for that ultimate fix (river rafting and 4x4 routes).

The North West Province offers the best of both worlds: close to the urban jungle of Gauteng, with many tranquil spots such as the Pilanesberg Nature Reserve and the Barberspan Bird Sanctuary (Ramsar-accredited for its importance for waterfowl and other migratory birds). If you want to sample the real “platteland” (countryside), visit the Groot Marico of South African author Herman Charles Bosman and taste the “mampoer” (an alcoholic beverage guaranteed to leave you at peace with even your mother-in-law!).

The Western Cape is where Africa and Europe meet. Here you will find homesteads built by the first white settlers to set foot on African soil, as well as vibrant township life and street markets. Table Mountain, Robben Island, the Cape vineyards, Stellenbosch, the West Coast of the Cape, the charming Overberg region – the Western Cape offers it all!
